Right after I found out I was pregnant with my second baby I immediately went into planning mode. I had saved most of daughter’s baby stuff and began figuring out if there was anything else I would need.
After going through everything it brought back the memories of the sleepless nights, endless crying and chaos of simply making a trip out of the house. That is when it hit me…holy crap I was going to have to do it with a three year old this time around. I wanted to make the transition as easy as possible so I spent A LOT of time researching.
Now that I have made it through almost 3 months with a toddler and a newborn I can ensure you that these are the essential must haves for baby number 2.

1. Diaper Bag Backpack
Having your hands free is a must with two kids and a Diaper Bag Backpack allows you to do that when you are on the go. This one is very modern and a great price too!
2. Wrap or Carrier
I rarely wore my first baby but this wrap was a game changer for when I had my second. It allowed me to help my toddler, make dinner and even enjoy spending some time outside. I love this wrap. It is great for newborns, very comfortable and super simple to use.
3. Double Stroller
I probably spent the MOST time researching strollers. I knew I wanted a travel system that allowed an infant car seat and a toddler seat and then two toddler seats for when baby was a little older. I narrowed my search down to the UppaBaby Vista and the Baby Jogger City Select Lux.
In the end I chose the Baby Jogger City Select Lux because it came down to price and functionality. Check out my full review here!
4. Swing
Just like the baby wrap I rarely used a swing for my first.
What can I say I enjoyed snugging my baby.
I knew this was not realistic for when my second would come along because I’d have a toddler who needs help more often than not. Plus I was living at my husbands parents when my first was born so I was lucky not to have to worry about making dinner or cleaning the house.
After researching and reading numerous reviews I ended up getting this one. Seriously it has been a life saver. The only downfall would be its size but it doesn’t take up as much room as you’d think. If you would like a more compact and nice looking swing, I’ve had a lot of people recommend this one.
5. Lounger
A lounger makes moving around the house so much easier and is also great for traveling. I decided to try out the Dockatot and am so glad I did. My daughter sleeps great in it and I feel so much better with her being in the dock than just on the bed. It is a little on the pricey side so if you would like a more affordable option I suggest the Bobby Newborn Lounger which I’ve heard great things about.

6. Monitor
Depending on the age of your older child you might need a second monitor. We were currently using this one for my first so we bought this second monitor so we could scan between both girls.
7. Bottles
It is recommended to buy new bottles for your next baby so make sure to add this to your list. These bottles have always worked best for both my babies.
8. Pacifiers
Like bottles, pacifiers should be replaced as well. For the first 6 weeks I used these and then I started using these.
I also highly recommend getting this one as well. It helps keep the pacifier in and it is much harder to lose!
9. White Noise Machine
Like the monitor you may need a second white noise machine. My oldest currently uses this one but we decided to try this for my second and it is wonderful. I am considering getting another one for my oldest.
10. Knotted Gown
I happened to discover knotted gowns with my second baby and let me tell you they are THE BEST pajamas. It makes late night diaper changes so much easier. I seriously will not dress my daughter in zipper pajamas and certainly not buttons anymore.
I get all my daughter’s knotted gowns here.
In addition to these products I highly suggest creating an Amazon Baby Registry. Even if you will not be having a baby shower, Amazon will give you a 15% off completion discount (for prime members only) for most items on your registry.
Don’t get me wrong the transition from 1-2 kids was hard but these must haves made it much smoother.
If you have any additional must haves I would love to hear them!
